Overwhelming a partner with affection and attention early on to gain trust and loyalty quickly. This is how they hide their true selves at the beginning.
**Blame Shifting**:
Making a partner feel responsible for issues or conflicts in the relationship. Nothing is ever their fault.
**Withholding Affection**:
Using affection as a reward or punishment to control behavior. Silent treatment is a big one.
**Financial Control**:
Controlling money and resources to limit a partner’s independence.
**Threats and Intimidation**:
Using threats of harm or leaving to control a partner’s actions. Threats to you, family, children or property.
**Minimising Feelings**:

Encouraging a partner to rely on him/her for emotional, financial, or social support to reduce independence. Trauma bond.
**Playing the Victim**:
Acting like the wronged party to elicit sympathy and manipulate a partner into forgiving bad behaviour.
